Should You Pay With Paper Or Plastic?
18 March 2012
With people planning their home projects for spring and summer, there is much to be desired in terms hiring contractors. In order to avoid being scammed by some contractors, your choice of your method for payment can also be of help. The Federal Trade Commission warns consumers to be careful of contractors who only offer you the option to pay in cash. Contractors who only give you the option to pay with cash may not be as reputable as those who give you other options for payment. This
news feature gives a great point as to why it is better to pay with your credit card as opposed to paying with cash or checks. Paying with a credit card gives you a paper trail. Consumers should also be aware that paying with a debit card is not the same as paying with a credit card.
Furthermore, debit cards also do not offer consumers
the same protection as opposed to paying with credit
cards.
"A credit card and debit card
are not the same thing. Remember your debit card is
connected to your checking account and the money
goes out automatically. By using a credit card, you
get extra protection because it takes longer for you
to pay that bill," said Angie Hicks of
Angie's List.
If by any chance you decide to pay cash, do not pay for the job in full upfront cause there is a chance that if the job is not completed, you might not be able to get back your money. If you can negotiate for an installment plan, like half up front and half after completion, then you will also be better off. Only pay in full after the job is completed. If you also pay with cash, have the contractor sign a receipt for your protection.
